The garden of The Scented Rose consists of a series of spaces defined by existing and new plantings, the buildings and the topography. The spaces are linked by axis. The intention is to be formal in style with informal planting, and to reflect and harmonise with the ordered, man-made surrounding landscape.

The garden has several distinct areas organised on gently changing levels. The design has been worked around existing features of an old grass tennis court, eighty year old hedges and topiary, and mature trees of oak, ash, birch, poplar and Oyster Bay pine.

The more formal part of the garden was established on the north side of the house, which involved moving the garage and driveway. This area is enclosed by the house and out buildings (south), the Oyster Bay pines (east), the double lattice wall which contains the pedestrian gate (north), and the oak tree and shrubbery (west). Thus establishing a large garden ‘room’ containing the Rose Walk, the David Austin Rose Border and the Open Space.
